Raw Milk Ninja

Thursday Aug 28, 2008

Admittedly we are a long way from seeing raw milk on the shelves of grocery chains and box stores.
Thankfully that isn’t stopping Mark McAfee from navigating to his true North.
Give this passionate guy a listen and I guarantee if, God forbid, you or a loved one runs into a diagnosis that the MD’s don’t have figured out you’ll think of Organic Pastures Dairy.
We are fortunate that he and his kind are here with the wisdom, COURAGE and ability to shepherd us into a new paradigm.
Oh yeah, and his chocolate colostrum rocks.
This is a cutting from my time with him that stands up just fine on it’s own.

Horizon Organic cheese…vegan?

Thursday Aug 28, 2008

I know vegans don't eat any animal products, but horizon organic cheese its made without use organic-approved microbial enzymes rather than rennet to form curds. Now I don't know if they treat their cows right but I am guessing they do. If so would it be vegan?

It's made with milk, from what I understand from veganism "no animal by-products" would include by-products from well treated animals.

My organic cheese states no "synthetic" hormones used….Do they still inject it with natural hormones?

Thursday Aug 14, 2008

I'm wondering if the packaging doesn't simply say no hormones what so ever, then they can work around it and inject extra natural hormones (derived from other animals) into the cow.

I'd prefer to not have the extra hormones thank you much! Should I be looking for organic chees that say No Hormones (at all)
I said "Extra" hormones…as in injected.
Actually I think it might be possible to derive hormones that would increase milk output from other animals

For years the estrogen that menopausal women took for hormone replacment therapy (HRT), was dervied from horse's urine. Neat, huh? Yuck!

I'm afraid it seems ALL cow's milk will have some hormones– just like breastmilk contains some hormones. But I believe most organic cheese is made from milk that comes from cows that have not received "extra" hormones in order to make them produce more milk.

Personally, we've chosen to find local, raw milk. Everything in the grocery store now is ultra-pasteurized, which means your milk could stay "stable" at room temperature for SIX MONTHS! That's right, you're organic milk doesn't even need to be refrigerated if it's ultra-pasteurized. That's just creepy and gross to me. Yuck. You might want to look into it if you're drinking organic milk for health reasons.

Please Don’t Let Them Kill Me! “The Truth About Organic Dairy

Thursday Aug 14, 2008

Rudy, a newborn calf’s experience as the “by product ” of the dairy. The truth about organic dairy.

“Economically, it is not possible for farmers to keep retired cows on the farm…. Organically raised cows will stay a part of the herd for an average of 6-8 years verses conventionally raised cows who only average 4 years….” (PPS: this means that organically raised cows have two more years of emotional and physical suffering and two more of their newborn babies stolen from them and murdered for Veal).

“We require that the packing plants (another word for slaughterhouse) get certified before we will do business. This means that our animals must be processed (brutally slaughtered) separately with clean equipment. This also means that they cannot use chemicals or pesticides in the plant.”

Are all organic cheese's rennetless?

Monday Aug 11, 2008

I have recently discovered the wonder of microbial enzymes used in some cheeses. I have gone about 11 years without eating cheese, and then about 6 months ago I found that not all cheese is made with rennet from calf’s stomachs. The hardest part for me is finding which cheeses are ok and which ones are not. Is it safe to say all organic cheeses are rennet less? Or is this an unsafe assumption?
p.s. here’s a great link for anyone looking for a list of rennet less cheese:
http://cheese.joyousliving.com/

Technically, few cheeses are rennetless. Microbial, GM, and vegetable rennets are indeed rennets.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that all organic cheeses are vegetarian safe. I'd guess a good portion are, but organic does not equate to vegetarian.
